Frequently Ask Questions
What are the first steps? How often will our sessions be? What will therapy look like? Explore these questions and more below.
The first step is to reach out and make contact. You’re welcome to get in touch using the contact form on the website, or you can go straight to booking a free 15-minute consultation call. This call gives you the opportunity to briefly discuss what’s bringing you to therapy, ask any questions you might have about how I work, and see if it feels like a good fit. There’s no pressure – just a chance for us to connect and see if I might be the right therapist for you.
If you’re ready and feel confident, you can also book your first full session directly through the website. Once we’ve arranged a time, you’ll receive everything you need by email, including a therapy agreement and practical details.
Therapy is usually most effective when we meet once a week at a regular time. This consistency allows for a sense of safety and momentum in the work. If weekly sessions aren’t possible due to your schedule or finances, we can discuss fortnightly appointments, though I may recommend weekly sessions during periods of more intensive EMDR or IFS work.
Together, we’ll find a rhythm that works for your life while keeping your progress at the heart of the process.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to how long therapy takes. Some clients come for short-term therapy, perhaps 6 to 12 sessions, to focus on a specific issue or event. Others choose longer-term therapy to work through more complex or longstanding challenges such as attachment trauma, emotional neglect, or deeply rooted beliefs.
Therapies like Schema Therapy or work involving parts and internal systems (IFS) tend to benefit from a longer engagement. Ultimately, the pace and length of therapy depend on your goals, your capacity, and how deep you’d like to go. We’ll check in regularly to review your progress and adjust the focus as needed.
EMDR sessions are quite different from traditional talking therapies. After some preparation and planning, we’ll use bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or alternating tones, to help your brain process distressing memories in a safe and structured way. EMDR allows your nervous system to ‘unstick’ from painful past events and update your emotional responses, without needing to talk in detail about what happened.
In an EMDR session, you might focus on an image, a body sensation, or a negative belief while engaging in the bilateral stimulation. I’ll guide you gently and monitor how you’re doing throughout. The sessions can feel emotionally intense but are grounded in safety and respect for your pace. This process works equally well in person or online, and many clients are surprised by how effective it can be even over video.
The first one or two sessions are about gently getting to know you and building a foundation for our work together. We’ll review a therapy agreement that outlines how sessions are structured and what you can expect. From there, we’ll begin to explore the issues you’d like to work on, any patterns or symptoms you’ve noticed, and how past experiences may be playing a role.
We’ll also look at your goals for therapy. Whether that’s healing from a specific trauma, improving your relationships, or better understanding parts of yourself. I’ll take a brief personal history to help guide the therapy, but we’ll go at your pace. You’re in control, and we’ll always work collaboratively to ensure the process feels safe and respectful.
Sessions are paid for via bank transfer or Stripe payments, and I ask that payment is made in advance of your appointment. You’ll receive all the relevant details once we book in, and I’ll send reminders as needed. If you ever need to reschedule, I ask for at least 48 hours’ notice to avoid a cancellation fee. If you’re unsure about anything payment-related, just ask – I’m happy to clarify.
