Schema Therapy

Reshaping Deep-Rooted Patterns

Schema Therapy is an integrative approach that helps people understand and change long-standing patterns in how they think, feel and relate to others.

These patterns often develop early in life and can continue to influence relationships, confidence and emotional wellbeing. Schema Therapy offers a structured way to recognise these patterns and begin reshaping them.

I offer Schema Therapy both in person in Wiltshire and online across the UK.

How Schema Therapy Can Help

How Schema Therapy Can Help

Schema Therapy may be helpful if you notice patterns in your life that feel difficult to change, even when you understand them logically.

These signs may show up as:

  • repeating relationship difficulties
  • persistent self-criticism or shame
  • anxiety or low mood that keeps returning
  • feeling emotionally disconnected or misunderstood
  • striving for perfection yet still feeling inadequate

Schema Therapy helps you understand where these patterns began and how they continue to shape your emotional world today. With this understanding, new ways of responding and relating to yourself can gradually emerge.

What Working With Schema Therapy Looks Like

What Working With Schema Therapy Looks Like

Understanding Patterns

We begin by identifying the patterns that seem to repeat in your life. These patterns often developed as ways of coping with earlier experiences and may still influence how you think and feel today.

Exploring Origins

Together we gently explore where these patterns may have begun. Understanding their origins can bring clarity and compassion to reactions that may previously have felt confusing or frustrating.

Developing Healthier Responses

As therapy progresses, we work on developing new ways of responding to difficult situations and emotions. This helps you move beyond old patterns and build a more balanced relationship with yourself.

Online and Face-to-Face Therapy

I offer in person Schema Therapy in Wiltshire two days per week, alongside online sessions for adolescents and adults across the UK.

I also offer online EMDR therapy is delivered in accordance with professional guidelines and can be highly effective for trauma recovery.

Understanding schemas

Schemas are deeply held beliefs about yourself, others and the world. They often develop during childhood or adolescence and can shape how you interpret experiences throughout life.

Some schemas create helpful structure, while others can become restrictive or self-critical. Schema Therapy focuses on recognising these patterns and learning how to change them.

Abandonment and Mistrust

Some schemas develop from experiences where safety or reliability felt uncertain. These patterns may lead to expecting rejection, betrayal or instability in relationships.

Shame and Self-Criticism

Other schemas involve deeply held beliefs about not being good enough, worthy enough or acceptable to others. These beliefs can shape confidence, identity and wellbeing.

Self-Sacrifice

Some people develop schemas that push them to meet extremely high expectations aiming for perfection or prioritise the needs of others, often to the detriment of themselves. This can lead to exhaustion or burnout.

Moving Towards Healthier Patterns

The aim of Schema Therapy is not simply to analyse the past, but to help create healthier ways of thinking, feeling and relating to yourself.

As patterns become clearer, many people find they develop greater self-understanding, emotional balance and flexibility in how they respond to life’s challenges.

Over time, this can lead to improved relationships, greater confidence and a stronger sense of personal stability.

Schema Therapy and Trauma

Many schemas develop in response to difficult early experiences or unmet emotional needs. Schema Therapy can help explore these patterns with care and compassion, allowing old beliefs to be understood in a new way.

In trauma-focused work, Schema Therapy may also be integrated with EMDR and other approaches. This combination can help address both the emotional patterns and the underlying memories that contribute to them.
